Radeon 9600XT
ok guys this is poopy, i was told to look at lq,org but the page never loaded. the other suggetsion whas a new thread. i have a deacent system, athlon 64bit 3200plus calwahamme gig of ram asus Mobo Sbllive and the radeon is he the basic specs. well being the ever wanthing to get hte most ou t of my 64bit, i went out and got some linux mandrake10 64bit nonbox distro. running KDE. its nice and all but def needs some TLC on my part. the biggest thing is gettin the Vcard to work porperly. im a linux newb reject the early attmeps and the complicatied isntalls of linux (lazy much?) so in eed lots fo help. i went to ati.com and tried to DL the proprietary ati dirver to enable my hardwar 3d stuffs, and in there youo are adeived to DL a fikle call "check.sh" to see what version of X86free is running. i DL this fiile and get a loverly message "command not found." i was otld in a previous post to set the permissions so i did. still no good. perhaps im not doing it right so here is waht i get.

Two problems:
1. most likely the current directory isn't in your path, this is pretty typical in linux. So.. in order to run a command in the directory you're currently in, you have to type ./check.sh
2. There isn't any point in running the command above, because ATI is slack, and hasn't released 64bit drivers for linux. I have the same card as you, and have had it since december, and have been unable to get any kind of hardware acceleration working. My current plan is to get rid of the ATI card and to get an NVidia card (whose linux drivers are much better anyway). I should have checked into this more before I bought the ATI card... ... on the positive side, the ATI zealots will tell you that there will be a driver release within the next couple of weeks... on the negitive side, they've been saying that since at least december when I bought this card.
Good Luck

thnx
thenx for hte help man, yea i have had mine since december as well preorederd form connect3d, although the thing i been really waitnig on is the HL2 realse not really the driver release, can't say im so bold that i'm gonna give up on ATI esepcailly since theyr cards blow away nvidia's, i;ve modded an x800 pro to the XT and even as a pro it blew away the new nvidia 6800. besides taht card is so impratical. you need at least a 480watt PS to run it it taks two plug ins ands suggest those plugs not be in seires with other plugs? (i.e. Hdd or CDrom) besdies that the chip arhchitecture is pretty crappy for a new chip design. they wont be coming out with a .11 ,micron ship for a long time and even so its not in the planning stages yet. this is the ship that the want to batlet he new PCIx card from ATI. Nvidia has really lsot the trace and i dont know why, they are better funded than ATI. makes no sense. im ATI for the newxt fews years at least. but i do apprecate the help.
where i site right now is i got the dirvers to install, and i have a freisd with a radeaon 9600XT that works in linux and kix pretty major ass. he as wel uses mandrake 10, the big things is that we dont need the 64 bit driverss ince we are of the superiro AMD family( not that i favor ati and AMD or anything) the bit thing is the new kernel. the dirvers the the 2.4.x kernel have loaded falwlessly, the 2.6.x kernel not so falwlessy, my frend had to patch the driver and make a small kernel mod to make it accept. we are currently wokring on mine and i promes if\when i get it working i'll elt you know. however i reamin newb at this linux stuff. so bascailly im spoon fed what i need to know.
