radeon 9600 3d acceleration not working

I am new to linux and am having problems with my radeon 9600. At first it didn't work so i downloaded the newest drivers and ran fglrxconfig. I used mostly all the defaults and then started X. This worked but i later noticed that 3d acceleration was not working. It gives me the error could not init font path element /usr/x11r6/lib/x11/fonts/speedo/. Did i miss something important when running fglrxconfig or did i just forget to install something when i installed linux. I am running Mandrake 9.2 if that helps anyone.

Thanks for any Help

I have the same problem onluy I'm using fedora

well i finally got it working i think. I just ignored the warning and went into x with 3d accel turn on and it worked. I get alot more fps in glxgears, which still isn't a whole lot because i am running a celeron. I think it might work with the version you have Sapphire, then again it may not.

tricky_linux 02-02-2004 05:21 PM

how much fps are you exactly getting?

scarryharry 02-04-2004 08:30 PM

Well this didn't actully solve my problem. I still don't have any real 3d support and it won't play any good games so unless someone can give details on how to enable this stuff looks like i will just keep using windows until linux or ati updates drivers. Linux has come a long ways since i last used it when it was like RH 6.1 so as soon as linux will support nwn and my graphics card i will be all set to switch. (To answer you question currently only 126 which was at least better than the 7 i got earlier)

tricky_linux 02-04-2004 09:04 PM

well see you are using linux and linux is not a OS which makes you become a zombie.
but it's for power users, so you have to do everything yourself.
For this kind hardware question, you need to post error which was reported on "dmesg" & that could help others & yourself a lot to solve your problem.

let's see the only errors i have gotten have been while configuring video and trying to play nwn. when i configure the desktop with my radeon 9600 it gives me the following "could not init font path element /usr/x11r6/lib/x11/fonts/speedo removing from list". As far as nwn it says "error". i have checked on the nwn forums and no one seems to have an answer for this. 2d games work but somewhat sluggish and games like tuxracer just lag really bad while games like nwn which require gl support just plain don't run.
Anyway that's the only errors i get so if anyone does know the problem i would be more than happy to listen.

tricky_linux 02-06-2004 06:48 PM

the error what you are talking about wasn't important at all.
what's important is your radeon 9600 don't have 3d support.
use "fglrxconfig" to see what fps are u getting. i am using 9600 pro and getting around 3000 fps.
you could check it yourself by using "glxinfo | head"
please state how did you installed your driver.

scarryharry 02-06-2004 11:11 PM

I ran fglrxconfig and can't find where it tells me fps. i thought that was just for configuring the card. Anyways the ouput for glxinfo | head looks like this

Loading required GL library /usr/lib/libGL.so.1
name of display: :0.0
display: :0 screen: 0
direct rendering: No
server glx vendor string: SGI
server glx version string: 1.2
server glx extensions:
GLX_EXT_visual_info, GLX_EXT_visual_rating, GLX_EXT_import_context
client glx vendor string: ATI
client glx version string: 1.3
client glx extensions:

i don't know what this means.

Installation steps
1. i ran fglrxconfig doing mostly defaults
2. it said something about make.sh and make_install.sh, i did this and it didn't work
3. i configured the video in xfdrake.

More information.
the only other thing i can tell you is that i am running a celeron 1.7 on a gigabyte 845e motherboard

this part explains you are not running in 3d acceleration mode.

i don't use mandrakes. so can't tell you specifically what you need to do. however, i think there should be a tool in xdrake or etc.. that would say you the startup log of XFree86. go to that section and post what it says on EE or WW or problems regarding your card acceleration.
