Unhappy Radeon 8500 LE DRI freezes X


hi.
i am using linux 2.4.20 (debian) and installed the ati.2 modules from gatos.sf.net including the kernel-drm (radeon.o), yet when i try to start any opengl application (i.e. tuxracer, even glxgears), X freezes completely. any help is appreciated greatly.
