Radeon 7500-- Problem with ATI driver
I loaded Mandriva 2006 on my Dell Inspiron 5100, Here are the Specs The problem is that I cannot get the card to work right, I have downloaded the drivers that are on ATI's web site and tried to install them about 40 million times with no luck. If anyone has ANY ideas at all they are welcome. Thank You.

if you try and start X and your monitor shuts off (or stays black) then the X server is configured wrong.
if the screen just stays black, then press CTRL + ALT + BACKSPACE to kill X, then paste all the lines from Xorg log file that start with (EE). the log file should be in /var/log/Xorg.log or something similar. i forget the exact filename.
a command such as this should be sufficient (change filename/path if necessary):
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.log | grep (EE)

I was looking around on the forums earlier this week and someone mentioned that you have to have a special driver in order for cards from 7500 and up to work with linux, but I couldnt find any such thing and I dont even know if that is the case.

that was my first question: do you have the proper driver?
what driver are you using? ie whats the filename and website URL that you got it from?

The name of the file is ati-driver-installer-8.24.8-x86.run and i got it off of ATI's Web Page, in the drivers section, my internet is slow right now and it wont go to their page so that i can get the URL. But it came right off of their site and so did the directions that i used, right out of the drivers section. Under notebook drivers

Quote:
Q2: Which ATI graphics cards can use this driver?
A2: The ATI Proprietary Linux driver currently supports Radeon 8500 and later AGP or PCI Express graphics products, as well as FireGL 8700 and later products. We do not currently plan to include support for any products earlier than this. Drivers for earlier products should already be available from the DRI Project or Utah-GLX project.

your card doesnt fall under this category, correct?

does configuring X with just 'radeon' driver work? is there specifically anything wrong with the way its being used now? ATi specifically states not to update your driver unless you NEED to.
only other thing i can suggest is this. im heading to bed.. good luck hunting.

Yes configuring the video driver with just radeon does work but the problem is that is wont let anything that needs opengl work, such as games and that is really the reason i need to fix this and also for some new video editing software.
