Quitting X
I would love to exit out of X so I can install my nvidia driver, however, i can't figure out how to do it. I vaguely remember using the xinit command last time I tried this (before my hard drive crashed and I had to reinstall Red Hat 9) but when i try it i get this error:
Fatal server error:
Server is already active for display 0
If this server is no longer running, remove /tmp/.X0-lock
and start again.
I sure could use some help...

There may be another way, but this is how I would do it. Open up your "/etc/initab" file, and change the runlevel. In Red Hat the runlevel for a text login should be "4", but I'm not 100% sure. However, your initab file will tell you what the correct runlevel is for a text login. Now save the file, reboot your computer, install the driver, and change the runlevel back to where it was.

Here's a much easier way. Hit alt+ctrl+F6 and login as root. Then type 'telinit 3' and go to the directory with the drivers and run them from there. I think that might save some time.

I already did that before, but X was still running in the background. But, it was quite a while ago, so I may have been doing something wrong.

Odd. Perhaps you could try telinit 1 or find where the init script is for the display manager you're using and hit alt+ctrl+F6 and then type:
/etc/path-to-init-file stop

Simple solution:
Open a console and su to root or switch to a virtual console and login as root.
Type:
init 3
as root.
Install nvidia drivers.
When done, type:
init 5
Simple as pie.

thanks
Thanks everyone for the suggestions...I tried the first idea (changing /etc/inittab) and it worked great, and I've found the alt+ctrl+F6 to be useful. Thanks again!
