Question Question about VGA to DVI connections.

Hi.

My old PC (from 2007) had a female DVI-I (dual link). My new PC has a DVI-D (dual link). The only connector I have is for a VGA to DVI-I. I'm currently connecting via a VGA connection. If I got a VGA to DVI-D connection, would this vastly improve my GeForce GTX650 video card performance or is it fine staying with the VGA?

Please see attached image. It shows the old DVI to VGA adapter near the bottom of the screen.

To your graphic card it would make no difference to speed or graphics.
So for now stick to your old VGA socket.
When you build a new system you can get a new graphic card that will bring better colours to your screen with a faster refresh rate.

Hope this reply helps you.

DVI-I has both digital and analog signal transport (the nalog is passed separately, through that 4 or five separate pins). It can be used with a DVI-I to VGA adaptor.
DVI-D has ONLY digital signal transport. There is NO adaptor to VGA (because it doesnt send analog signal). So you can use it exclusively with a digital cable.

The VGA or DVI connectors give no performance boost or penalties - they just send the video output after it is already done.

Although digital can have better image quality in certain casses because the signal is not influenced by environmental static (as can happen to VGA).

There actually are VGA -> digital (DVI/HDMI) adapters around. Nothing like the simple plug adapters though, and very expensive-

Nitpicking a bit, but the OP has a DVI-D -> VGA type issue. It seems this thing does VGA->DVI/HDMI only.

Although at that price (actually much lower) better buy a new video card or monitor...

I wouldnt call it an 'issue' myself, but that is nickpicking as well

I just put included that link out of intrest and because LinusStallman wanted to know about DVI->VGA, but put 'VGA to DVI-D connection' in there and its possible that someone will find it in the future.

BTW, agreed 100%, for that sort of cost in 95%+ of cases people would be better of getting a new video card.

Just out of curiosity i googled around a bit.

Lol, there are actually DVI-D->VGA connectors, which look exactly like the DVI-I->VGA ones (dont jump to conlusions until read the whole post!!).

Only if you look at the customer reviews, will see that they dont actually work for them.

One customer summed it up nicely:

Quote:
About 95% of buyers of this item mistakenly believe that this will turn a vga monitor into a DVI monitor.

Of course this is not the case. This adaptor is only for converters or kvm swithces. If you have a DVI-D port on your computer and a VGA monitor just consider switching the monitor as the converters cost over $100. This little adaptor will definately NOT work.

The seller is making boatloads of money on a false premise.
So. It will not work if you want to use it to transfer DVI-D -> VGA signal with it unless you have one of those things cascade9 linked earlier.

Wow, I'd never seen that before. Thanks for the computer trivia!
