question about agp in linux

Coming from windows, In order to use a agp video card, windows needed a motherboard/chipset specific driver for the os to recognize the agp port. Is there a Linux correllation?

Basically what I am asking is, I have a motherboard (VIA KT266a/VT8233a) and a video card (Nvidia geforce fx 5900).
Are only the nvidia drivers needed, or are chipset specific agp drivers needed as well?

If you are using a pretty recent distro for example MDK 9.1, you should be able to get the AGP to work without any magic drivers, other than loading up the NV specific drivers from Nvidia. I have a VIA board and all worked pretty much out of the box.
