Welcome to LQ.

With that setup, I can't see why any distro wouldn't work. Basically it will come down to how much you already know and how much you're willing to learn. If you want to be broken in nicely, then may I suggest Mandrake or SuSE. Mandrake is currently on version 9.2, but if I were you, I'd go for version 9.1. And SuSE is on 9.0 I believe. Please note that the version number of the various distros do not relate to one-another.

If you want to jump straight in and get configuring the system and tailoring it to your needs, then I would suggest you take a look at Slackware or Debian. 9.1 and 3.1 respectively, I think.

Of course, there are many others. You could go for RedHat 9.0, but beware that RH are no longer 'supporting' the average desktop user - they're going focussing on their Enterprise audience. However, they are and will be (I believe) very active on the community developed Fedora Project.

If you know what you're looking for in a distro, such as version X of programme Y, then check out to compare distros.

Hope this helps.

Oh, and just as a side: very descriptive thread title.
