QNAP NAS-server under Linux?

Hello all,

I have a question. Can I use a QNAP TS201 NAS-server under Linux? I Looked up their website but they mention only windoze and Apple Mac as supported clients. On the other hand, it provides FTP, has an Ethernet connection and has Linux as OS in the server. Does anyone has some experience with this device? Thanks all of you.

Greetings,

Ronald

Hi

I don't know about exactly that NAS server, but I've used others without any problems. You typically configure it using a browser, then mount it over a network. When they say they support Mac or Windows, it means you need to use Netatalk or Samba in Linux to mount the drives.

I would stay away from Netatalk if you don't need Macintosh support - mounting Macintosh volumes is not stable, at least it was not some years ago when I tried it. Sharing with Netatalk worked fine though.

If you configure it for Windows, to the Linux computer, the NAS looks just like any Windows file server.

There is no NFS supported on TS-101/201 but you can find the threads on their forum telling you how to do it.

My friends and I started to use the new TS-209 Pro and TS-109 Pro series after we saw their advertisement of NFS supported, and till now we got good experiences. These two models seems the only available NFS supported models in the SOHO NAS market. Is there anybody found other similar NASes that can offer the same NFS features, and also with PHP/MySQL supported?
