Angry pulling hair out angry help me configure for love of god

I'm freaking losing it. I've searched the boards and I've made some progress but when I follow the same directions that others gave I get nowhere, so please help me configure my ethernet card at the very least. I have a Linksys pcm100 ether fast pcm card and I am running the latest version of college linux (based on slackware) with kernel version2.4.20, on a 266 mhz gateway laptop with 64 megs of ram. I've already been into the lib/modules/2.4.20/pcmcia directory and attemped to set up the tulip.o.gz with insmod and it says all of this.

-Using /lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o.gz
-/lib/modules/2.4.20/kernel/drivers/net/tulip/tulip.o.gz:init_module: No such device
-Hint:insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters

Well i've checked that directory and it does actually exist. I'm so confused. I'm having the same problem with my sound card drivers. I'm really at a loss of words on this one.I've posted on one other board and on these boards and nobody will help me. 30 people viewed my last post but with onlyl one reply. I've searced all over google and am definitely losing my patience. I know it's not my place to lecture the gurus but doesn't the whole system depend upon experts helping newbies, so they can in turn become experts and help other newbies? Why should I have to post twice? It's not like I can just call linux tech support and have them help me. Please help.

remain calm

i feel your rage concerning ppl not responding, so here i go responding. i need a bit better idea of what's going on, so give me the following:

1) the output of "#lsmod"

2) the portion of "#lspci -v" that refers to your ethernet card and sound card; this should tell which chipset the cards use

3) output of "$dmesg" (can be gotten w/ "$dmesg>name.of.text.file")

4) are you certain that the tulip driver is the driver you need? am i correct in understanding that this is a PCMCIA card?

5) i tried to find stuff on google concerning the drivers for the "linksys pcm100" under linux, but to no immediate avail; fish around a bit yourself (i'll fish as well) for which driver works with your card

using the search engine for this website, i found a couple of interesting threads that're on the topic of pcm100:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...linksys+pcm100

from the next link (at the end, seems promising):

"Dude, you made the same mistake I did earlier, that little dmesg read with ne2000 listed, he's actually got the pcmcia card that uses pcnet_cs, heck I've got one of those, my money is on it being a Linksys PCM100. "

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...0&pagenumber=2

try investigating the pcnet_cs driver....

zetsui,

Comments like that are unhelpful into the extreme, please refrain from it.

stupidclese,

You can't hand insmod pcmcia modules, the daemon cardmgr does that automagically for you. I have actually 2 of the same NIC, it does run under the pcnet_cs module, and so if its not autoloading, then there's probably something odd about the kernel recognizing your pcmcia bridge. First things first though:

/sbin/lsmod

See if pcnet_cs is one of the loaded modules.

If not, lets see of your pcmcia slot is even getting noticed properly:

/sbin/cardctl ident

That's a pretty good start for now.

Cheers,

Finegan

i have this card. had same problem. heres how i fixed it:

first off that driver is now part of the hotplug package.

second of all, it will still hate you. what I had to do is put in my /etc/init.d/pcmcia :
when its recognizing the cardbus is there, put /sbin/cardctl insert
then /sbin/ifup eth0

then when you shut it down, the card will say it is off, but the lights will still be on, but dont worry about that. hope this helps!

forgive this outburst, but i must

i wanted to say something after the first post, but i restrained myself from doing so and finegan tried to moderate politely. however, i didn't feel this second comment should escape what i had on my mind:

z, plz go back to being an idiot somewhere else, as your comments are so helpful i'm about soil myself with anticipation of your next acutely articulated outburst. crapping on finegan is about the last thing you should do, and crapping on slackware IS the last thing you should do. finegan has assisted more people on this site than you could count, so if you knew a goddamned thing, you wouldn't have made a second post.

if you possessed any sort of intelligence that could be considered non-animal (speaking hypothetically; let's suspend our disbelief) you would recognize that the ease with which you operate your superbly advanced Mandy 9.1 takes certain things for granted, such as that the user doesn't care about hands-on configuration of the system and would rather have a GUI that's glitchy as nuts than a command line function that's much more reliable. the strength of slackware lies in its simple organization and the user's ability to edit files to fix things DIRECTLY, not letting some GUI do it for you. this results in, as expected, a higher level of understanding on part of the user, something painfully absent with Mandy. oh, and btw, how secure is your Mandy 9.1? again, no need to post a reply, i'm sure it's tight as a drum, just like every Mandy system.

last time i checked UNDERSTANDING is what this board is really all about, so understand that i understand i'm being a hothead and hopefully you'll understand that crapping on people who are trying to fix their computers is not constructive (but crapping on people who crap on people is okay? only in germany...).

yocompia-
1.) the output of lsmod is
Module size used by
pcnet_cs 12000 0 (unused)
8390 6064 0 [pcnet_cs]
ds 6568 2 [pcnet_cs]
yenta_socket 9696 2
pcmcia_core 38144 0 [pcnet_cs ds yenta_socket]
ide-scsi 8080 0
usb-uhci 22252 0 (unused)
usbcore 58176 1 [usb-uhci]
apm 9640 2

2) the out put of lspci doesn't say anything about my yamaha sound card or my linksys 10/100 pc ethernet card..

3) too much crap to mention. Can't get it from my linux box to this one. Mentions all of my system specs, and what looks like the drivers I have attempted to set up.

4) From what I have read, yes I am sure, but I have heard otherwise from replies on this post.

My card is identified as the card i mentioned using that second command finegan.

Socket 1:
product info: "Linksys". "EhterFast 10/100 Integrated PC Card (PCM100)", "Ver 1.0", " "
manfiD : 0x0149, 0xclab
function: 6 (network)

jdoliuc:
I don't seem to have that directory. I think my equivelant is /lib/modules/2.4.20/pcmcia. Do you have a link where I can get that driver, or help me out with what commands to use to make it install and then how to configure.
zetsui:
I don't appreciate you snide attitude. I'm not a dumbass, don't talk to me like one. Configuring a linux box is hard if you have never done it before. I can't use mandrake because my system is so old, it didn't respond well when I installed it, under gnome or kde, and college linux looked to be a better distro for my old laptop (and it seems to run much faster). For the record, mandrake's auto configure and GUI based configuration couldn't catch my soundcard or ethernet card eith :P .

well i am only really familar with debian and redhat, as thats all i have had the pleasure of dealing with, so i'm sure things are a little different from your end of things. basically you want to find the "hotplug" package for your disro...i have no idea where you would find this, but im sure its out there. you should also recompile with hotplug support in the kernel.
basically what that does is treats your pcmcia card as if its a PCI card, which is why the extra commands are needed. all /etc/init.d is, is the stuff that is run at boot time. try rc.d or some equivalent for your distro.

after you find and setup hotplug try doing a
/sbin/cardctl insert
/sbin/ifup eth0
ping linuxquestions.org
and see what happens.

From what I've read, I think the pcmcia_core module is the correct one, and it shows up durring lsmod so doesn't that mean it is already installed and it just needs to be binded using cardmgr? Well when I try to run the cardmgr command, all it does is say
cardmgr[333]: open_sock(socket 0) failed: Device or resource busy.
vardmgr[333]: another cardmgr is already running?
anybody have any ideas?

you mentioned before that you didn't look through dmesg, but you might want to do just that. i suspect you should do this b/c if there's already something on the socket, it should be listed somewhere in the boot messages.

when you do look through dmesg, try grepping for either "card" or "cardmgr" if you feel too lazy to go through the whole thing: "$dmesg | grep -i card". maybe there's already something bogus loaded that has to be taken care of first, before the card can be acknowledged. if this doesn't turn up anything interesting, i suggest that you just take the 5-10 minutes that it'll take to check through the output of dmesg to search for clues (i know, it sounds very scooby doo).

When I grepped for card it returned this
options: [pci] [cardbus] [pm]
but that's all it said. Is that any help? cardmgr didn't return anything. But when I try cardmgr, it says
cardmgr[334]: open_sock(socket 0) failed: Device or resource busy
cardmgr[334]:another cardmgr is already running?
Does this give you any clues?
