PS/2 Optical Mouse Problem With Ubuntu Live CD

I have a PS/2 Optical Mouse, and it does not work.

I'm working off the Live CD (5.10) (to see if Linux/Ubuntu is for me).

It boots up fine, but when I get to the main screen my mouse cursor doesn't move, however when I Left-click it, the cursor heads to the upper right, and the only thing I can use is the calendar. Please help me with this problem as I can't do anything else.

P.S. Will all my data be DELETED if I feel like making the jump from Windows XP (what I'm posting this on) to Linux/Ubuntu?

I can't answer your question about your Data when you switch from Live to install, but I believe w/ Ubuntu, whatever you install, its there when you install, but I could be wrong.

As for the Mouse. There's been a couple posts on this here and on other forums(Not just about Ubuntu). A couple days ago, a poster "fixed" this problem by using a USB mouse. If you have an el cheapo one, or spare USB mouse you can use, try it and see if that fixes the problem. You may also want to download the most current version of Linux(6.06 Dapper Drake). That probably won't make much of a difference, just a suggestion.

My guess, a USB mouse will work fine.

I don't have another mouse. I'd like to solve the problem using the one I have.
