Proliant 1850R servers
Hello, I've bought an old proliant 1850R server, it's the basic 3U rackmount model with a 550MHz processor, 128MB of ram and one 9.1GB hard drive.

I want to set it up as a web/ftp/mail server, but I want to upgrade first, and this is where my question comes in: Can I put ordinary CPUs and RAM into it, or do I need special compaq stuff?

With servers it can be a whole different ball game....check and see what type of RAM the system takes..most servers use ECC memory at the minimum. The same goes with the CPU's. The system may only support a certain type and may only go up to a specified speed. I know with many of the IBM servers from that era that you couldn't just throw any CPU or memory DIMM in the server and expect it to work. If you can, get the specs on the system from HP.
