Problems with SCSI Scanner via Adaptec APA-358 MiniSCSI adapter

I am trying to get my old Microtek ScanMaker E3 SCSI scanner working (under ubuntu linux) using an old Adaptec APA-358 MiniSCSI adapter / cable and the ppscsi driver.
Everything seems to work okay (drivers loaded, scanner detected etc.), but when I try to scan I get:
Code:

scanimage: scanning image of size 850x1168 pixels at 24 bits/pixel
scanimage: acquiring RGB frame, 8 bits/sample
scanimage: reading one scanline, 2550 bytes...  FAIL Error: Error during device I/O

This setup works fine under win98 :-(

I'm not sure if this is a problem with sane-microtek or (more likely) ppscsi.
I can't find much help on the 'net so I assume this is quite a rare setup.

Has anyone out there had any experience with scanners and the Trantor / Adaptec t358 SCSI adapter?

Cheers,

Steve.

Back in kernel 2.4, Adaptec's APA358 parallel to SCSI - adapter used to work with t358.ko kernel module.

Now it seems to be absent in 2.6 kernels, at least in Fedora.

I wonder why it was removed from the kernel, or was it really merged with ppscsi driver?

Anyone knows the reason why those ppSCSI drivers were removed from Fedora?
