problems with refresh rate and drivers for Radeon 7000VE

I'm new to linux so pardon my ignorance.
What I've got is BX Master board (with Intel 440BX chipset) with Celeron 600MHz, ATI Radeon 7000VE and Philips 107E21 monitor. There are a few more components there but I don't have problems with those (not that I'm annoyed with yet anyway - ok a mouse, but I will first look for threads on it).

I'm running Slackware 10 with 2.4.26 kernel and (probably but I'm not sure) xorg 6.7.0 and KDE 3.2.3.

I have a problem with configuring X properly.
The default configuration works almost fine except for two things:

1. I'm not able to run X in 1024x796 at more than 60Hz and as many other people I'm quite annoyed with that and not at all satisfied.
I have edited the xorg.conf file and changed VSync and HSync to the monitor specified values.
It changed only one thing. My KDE started to lie. It says (in the Control Centre -> Peripherials -> Display) that it's running at 85Hz but my eyes and the monitor say it's rather 60Hz (it really hurts).

2. I'm having problems with configuring the hw graphics acceleration.
I've downloaded and installed the latest drivers from the DRI site. They installed properly reporting no errors.
Yet the performance of 3D graphics is very poor. I have seen things this computer can do in Windows so it's the matter of bad configuration (of course, it's the old card and processor but I'm not expecting miracles here).

I'm not sure but those two problems may actually have something in common.

e.g. xorgcfg exited with the following message:

Unloading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/nv_drv.o
Loading /usr/X11R6/lib/modules/drivers/i740_drv.o

there are similar strange messages I can't make much out of in /var/log/Xorg.0.log and ...log.old
(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc Radeon RV100 QY [Radeon 7000/VE] rev 0, Mem @ 0xe0

(II) VESA(0): Attempting to use 85Hz refresh for mode "1024x768" (118)
#(what does this mean???)
(II) do I need RAC? No, I don't.
(II) VESA(0): VBESetVBEMode failed...Tried again without customized values.

I'm running xorg.conf with the following section:
Section "Device"
Identifier "VESA Framebuffer"
Driver "vesa"
only because when I had "Driver "radeon" " x didn't work at all. It complained about being unable to load driver modules:
and something else. (if it's necessary I'll post the exact logs later as I'll have to restart X to get that again).

Please, help me with it.
