Problems with mounting a CPU Cooler
I've recently decided to replace the stock cpu fan on my athlon 64 3000+ socket 754 fan. I didn't have a problem until I went to remove the mounting from the back of my motherboard (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16813130493). It has a metal plate on the back that once unscrewed doesn't come off. The fan I'm mounting has a diffrent screw size so I need to be able to remove it. This is my fan:
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16835118115 Mainly I'm just looking for a way to remove the metal plate on the back of my motherboard. Is there some sort of solution I can use to dissolve the (I assume) adhesive that's holding it to the motherboard? |
Leave the back plate so there is extra support for the heavy heatsink. If you can not mount the heatsink because of this back plate, you may need to unmount the motherboard to get to the back plate. If you are going to unmount the motherboard, be very careful and do it a day after the computer is disconnected from the outlet. Usually, unmounting the motherboard creates other problems that did not show up before unmounting it.

I just did this a couple of days ago :)
It's covered on the FAQ on Zalman's website here They suggest you warm it up with a hair dryer for about a minute to loosen the glue. It can then be prised off, though this takes some force - be careful. |
You chose a good fan it dropped my CPU about 20c w/arctic silver. I was running 70c idle temps before now I'm about 50c.

if you tear off the mount, how are you going to reattach it? may not be required unless required by the factory
