Well as I said in my last post, the real killer for me is not having a net connection on the machine I need to get this up and running on. I am writing this on a laptop with an old Windows partition because my only connection to the outside world is with a Huawei dongle, and because this dongle is brand new, no one has written a Linux driver for it as yet. So I cannot translant it to the other machine. Furthermore, I have no access to any wireless networks where I am staying and the other machine is a tower desktop, so I cannot bring it within range of any. I'm sure a Linux hotshot could get around all these things and the rest of it, but I ain't no hotshot and since Bill has seen fit to give half his dough to charity, I don't feel quite so bitter about giving him some more of mine.

SO the trouble is that you can't get the software onto the Linux PC?

Solutions:

1) Download the software to another computer, put it on a USB stick and transfer it to the other computer.
2) Many USB modems use PPP and are supported by various kernel modules, I recommend trying to setup a PPP connection using the tools you have on that computer. It also help if you look up or post the exact model.
3) If you have an ethernet card in the Window$ computer, why not make it into a router and route the connection to the other computer. I've had to do this once with 2 Linux computers, because we only had 1 USB modem (also Huawei), and it did work with just a bit of configuration using PPP.

I guess you could also give up, but do you really want to ? If you do, nobody will stop you, and if you think this is the best way, then do it.

I'm not yet ready to give up, TM. I am simply exploring other non-Linux solutions to this particular problem, which for me, I have to admit, is a tough one. And who wants to make life even tougher than it is?

No more suggestions for the time being then, guys.....

BTW, I keep getting this message which never happened under the old system: "You must spread some Reputation around before giving it to H_TeXMeX_H again."

You can't just continuously give rep to a single person, it's supposedly to prevent misuse of the system. I think it's a stupid un-feature, though.

Yeah, I think you have to +rep someone else before me again.

Nope! I just successfully repped up MTK358 then tried to reuprep you (or "reuprepu" for short)- and got the same message back as before. :-/

Well, that's strange. I've only gotten this once and it worked after reping someone else.

Maybe you have to up-rep a different member in a different thread.
