I am having trouble using a Tandberg SLR7 20/40GB Tape Drive. It is connected to an Adaptec SCSI controller.
When I try to backup/restore, the drive spins for about 10 seconds, stops and the operation hangs (which locks up the console I'm in).
Here's the rub: If I use the same drive (without the external housing) connected directly to the SCSI adapter internally it works perfectly.
It should also be noted that I am attempting to backup/restore using the tar command, cpio command, and a third-party software called Lone Tar. The problem occurs with all of them.

Any ideas?
