Problems with ESS688 sound card

I'm having trouble getting my ESS688 ISA PnP AudioDrive card to work under Linux. During boot-up, the kernel
complains about failing to init the dsp chip.

When I try modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 esstype=688

the init_module functions fails complaining that the device is not found.

Anyone experienced this problem? The hw works fine with those settings under Windows btw.
