Problems with Debian 9 (stretch) and USB-C/Thunderbolt to HDMI Dual Monitors

I'm having some issues getting dual monitors to work with my new Thinkpad X1 Carbon. The HDMI port works okay and i can get HDMI to HDMI working. But the USB-C (or thunderbolt port if thats what its called) to HDMI will not work. ive listed some things that ive tried below.

Note:
I can provide any other information that will help diagnose the issue as well. The laptop is an Thinkpad X1 Carbon currently running the vanilla kernel from the 'linux-image-amd64' package from the debian 9 (stretch) repository.

Any help that anyone can provide is greatly appreciated! Thanks in advance!

ISTR reading that TBolt or USB-C can be picky about cables/adapters. Maybe what you're using isn't up to required specs for your (gfx) usage?

Thank you for the reply. I'll try ordering another cable and try that out. I am starting to wonder if this is related to me running the vanilla Debian Kernel. I'm wondering if the Debian Kernel has not integrated USB-C Display support yet. I'm trying to find some more information in regards to what Modules are compiled with the Debian Kernel and what modules are needed to run USB-C display but am having a hard time finding information on it. Maybe i'll head over to debian.org and see if i can find something where i can ask the kernel developers for Debian if they have integrated USB-C Display support into the latest Debian Kernel release (linux-image-4.9.0-8-amd64 4.9.110-3+deb9u6). What lead me to think it may be an issue with the Debian Kernel was from this article i came across after posting this.
