Having trouble installing a piece of hardware? Want to know if that peripheral is compatible with Linux?

Unhappy Problems with Creative ViBRA16X Sound in RH8

I installed a SoundBlaster card which was recognized by RedHat 8.0 at start-up and installed as: Creative ViBRA 16X sound card. The "Hardware Browser" applications says that the card is installed with the 'sb' driver and the device slot says: N/A.

Now... I can play CD's and mp3's with XMMS. I just installed RealPlayer 9.0 and when I try to run it, there is no sound and RealPlayer says is because there is no sound card. I ran the application: RedHat Menu --> System Settings --> Sound Card detection, and the answer was...no soundcard detected.

Is this a problem with the soundcard or with the software? Should I install another device or driver?

Good question, I've been googling for a couple of days, it appears the card is detected and configured automatically by redhat hat 9 shrike, but the problem pop's up again in severn, I have the same card, hardware browser detects the card, but sound card detection misses it apparently. If you learn how to configure your sound card properly please post your procedure up here so we may benefit.

AS with many Linux things...they just seem to work in the end. I installed a different version of RealPlayer and it (the software) finnally recognized my soundcard. Regarding the problem with the hardware browser...it still misses my sound card completely, but I can listen to Internet radio...so who cares. Must be a glitch
