problems with cdrom

I'm using Mandrake 10.0 and recently my hard drive has crashed. I bought a new one and reinstalled the system. Everything works fine except my cdrom. Before the crash I also had Mandrake 10.0 and when I inserted the cd into the cdrom the icon appeaed on my desktop. When I wanted to change the cd I hit the eject button on the cdrom and the cd came out, and the icon disappeared. On inserting the next cd the icon appeared and I could work with the data from another cd on and on again.
At present when I insert the cd the icon appears but once I push the eject button it opens but the icon stays on. When I insert another cd I'm unable to read it's content. Either I see just a part of the data or some funny symbols. When I hit the right mouse button and want to eject the cd I can't and I can't unmount the cd either. All I can do is reboot the systemout and try again. It's a bit frustrating when to see the content of another cd I have to reboot everytime. I tried different option regarding mounting of the cdrom but nothing works. At best it works twice or three times and after that the system refuses to open the cdrom or unmount it, not to mention viewing the content of another cd. The funny thing is that sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn't I'm new to the linux family but I get everything done (installatins, config) on my own with few questions asked but this not only puzzles me but it frustrating as hell. Whatever I do it won't work or works as it feels. How can I get my cdrom to work as before so I can view a limitless number of cd's

That's a lot

It sounds like you are using automount. Look in /etc/fstab and see if you are using automount for the CD. If so take automount out of the /etc/fstab line for CD and reboot.

the syntex

Thanks for the reply

That is a exect syntex of etc/fstab:

/dev/hdd /mnt/cdrom auto umask=0,user,iocharset=iso8859-2,codepage=852,noauto,ro,exec 0 0

There's no automount in it. there's auto but taking it out disables the cdrom completely.
