Problems with ATI drivers ( x1600 series card )
Hello,
I'm having some problems with ati drivers. It was working fine until i had to reboot my computer. Now, i cannot start X when using fglrx driver ( vesa works fine ). I'm running Debian Etch and have installed it using this howto http://technowizah.com/2006/10/debia...i-drivers.html Here is the Xorg.0.log Code:
II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0 Code:
# lspci Thanks, Fernando. |
Forgot to attach Xorg.conf.
Here it is: Code:
# /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file) |
I think this is the problem with your configuration, but I am not 100% sure:

Hello,
Thanks for your reply. I have changed default depth to 24 and restarted Xorg. Now my computer freezes when i do this. I get an black screen and cannot change to an terminal ( ctr + alt + f1 ) or ssh on my computer ( totally freezed ). Do you know what can i do or what is causing this? Thanks again! |
Does xorg start automatically when the computer boots, or do you type startx or a similar command? If you get to a terminal when the pc boots, check the log file again, then change back to the 16 depth, or restore the backed up log file. Thinking about it, aticonfig makes a backup file too of the original xorg.conf. You could try recovering this, and then editing the file manually changing the vesa driver to fglrx (and check the depth). Another option would be if you got back to a terminal, you could run (I think this is it with debian):
Code:
dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg EDIT: The backed up file from aticonfig will be at /etc/X11/xorg.conf.original-0 |
Hello,
I have booted up in recovery mode and changed the driver to vesa and it works now. Do you know if this is a bug with the fglrx driver or how can i use it? I need it to use 1440x900 resolution and use my two monitors on the same card. Thanks, Fernando. |
Oh! You are using two monitors. I think aticonfig has an option for this:
Code:
aticonfig --help | grep dual |
Hello,
I have already done it. But my computer still freezes when X start. |
Hello,
I have booted again in recovery mode and here is what i get on Xorg.0.log: Code:
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0 |
I am sorry but I think this one might be beyond me. Perhaps someone else could help you out on here. I am just not sure. This might be a bug with the drivers. The last drivers I used with debian that *just worked* were the 8.40.4 drivers. Since then, I have had problems with various things.
The release notes can be found here https://a248.e.akamai.net/f/674/9206...ux_8.40.4.html |
Hello,
I have installed the ATI Catalyst™ 7.11 version and now it's working. It seens to be a bug with the 7.12 version. Thanks for your help. |
Well, Finally I have the ATI card installed right. After reading all the disclaimers and trying 15 different "guaranteed" methods of flawless installation, I used Envy. It loaded easy, even after I goofed up and stopped it half way through.
Please, try Envy (linked), it solved all my ATI problems. I'm running Gusty on a Radeon 9600 with all the bells and whistles now. Got the cube running, wobbly windows, all sounds and graphics. |
Great, well done. I found both the 7.11 and 7.12 versions of the driver to be quite buggy - especially the 7.12 version. One to keep an eye on is the RadeonHD project, which aims to implement a free and open source driver for R500 and R600 chipsets (thats the x1000 and HD 2000 cards). Theres a link here. They seem to release an update every two weeks.
