Problems Setting Up Quad Monitors In Linux Mint 20

Hi all,

I have scoured the net to try and find an answer, and have yet to find a solution. I have integrated graphics and a dedicated graphics card. Most of the information I have found is ancient. I have installed ARanR, and it only recognizes two monitors. The other monitors and cables do work because I tested them on another computer. I'm wondering if there is a compatibility issue with the cards?

I had similar trouble almost a year ago, so https://bugzilla.opensuse.org/show_bug.cgi?id=1193457 might be instructive. Also inxi -Gaz input/output, run from within X, pasted here might help us help you. Also check /sys/class/drm/ and xdriinfo.

Some motherboard BIOS are tricky to figure out what to set how to get dual GPUs working.

When I did it I had to handcraft xorg.conf, can it be generated automatically nowadays for two cards?

Many (most) cards with multiple ports can use all the available ports at the same time. AFAIK it is difficult to use multiple cards at the same time for graphics, though I don't have a machine with dual GPUs other than my laptop so cannot test that.

You didn't read my bug. Little attempt was made to configure via xorg.con*. The goal was nearly pure automagic. The only contamination of purity was about positioning. Automagic seems always to place all outputs side-to-side. It's a relatively simple matter to override automagic with xrandr to place them in whatever extended desktop layout is desired. Arandr can simplify it for the inexperienced user. DEs typically mimic or incorporate arandr functionality, and add incorporation of the result to settings automatically, while arandr generates a script that the admin has to decide what to do with. For global application, on Debians the location /etc/X11/Xsession.d/ usually works; on rpm distros such as Fedora, Mageia and openSUSE, /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/ usually works. Otherwise, ~/.profile should be able incorporate it (I've never tried; global WFM).

I saw your bug now. OK, but in initial post I do not see dual video hardware listed. There is just one AMD graphics card. Some motherboards disable integrated graphics when add-on card is inserted. Nowadays most BIOS-es allow both enabled, I think the first task here is to check if these cards are enabled in hardware.

The problem here is the motherboard supports a CPU that incorporates a GPU. It has DVI and HDMI ports for the purpose. But, the installed CPU is not one that incorporates a GPU. Thus, the motherboard's DVI and HDMI ports will remain useless unless an appropriate CPU replacement is made.

Now we are getting somewhere. So in actuality there is no integrated video with current configuration.

I'm not sure if I should mark this solved and start another thread, or just continue here. It appears that the CPU is not compatible with the GPU. That part is solved. I did put another graphics card in here from my other workstation. I did get quad monitor to work. For about 10 seconds. The 4th monitor started to flicker and the two monitors that were connected to that card went black. I disconnected the 4th and now I can run 3, but I really need 4 for all the garbage I run.

It's a bummer that I have two graphics cards and a gpu, but can can only run 3 monitors. I'll list the hardware here in case someone is looking for a known dual graphics card setup with Mint 20, and possibly some suggestions on how to get the 4th to run.

Thanks everyone for the replies.

When I went to post lshw it said I was blocked???

If it worked and went black then you ran out of power, likely. Did you connect the power cable to your graphics card? The power from PCI slot does not suffice.

Neither of the cards have connections for external power. My stuff is ancient in computer terms. lol I do however have a usb to PCIe adapter. Methinks if I get a 4 pin power extension cable, and use a USB 3.0 cable I can mount it on top of the case. I know it's redneck AF, but if it works... I am also not fond of how close the graphics cards are too close to one another. The cards are so big that it prevents me from using another PCIE slot anyways. My concern is if it is "plug 'n play" and if usb 3.0 is fast enough to run 2 monitors. Even at 1080p.

Thanks!

Your distro probably requires you use sudo or login as root to run lshw. Instead, show inxi -CGMSaz. We don't need to know about all your hardware.

It's not a CPU compatibility issue. Your CPU simply does not provide a GPU to feed the motherboard's DVI and HDMI connectors. You could replace your CPU with a model that does include a GPU, and sell your old CPU to reduce your net cost of the upgrade.

The motherboard may provide enough power for the two discrete graphics cards. It depends on their power demands. However, the PSU may be your limiting factor? How many watts is its advertised output? What model is your #2 graphics card? Max watts for HD 6750 is 86.

It's funny that you mention the PSU. I was just reading about the power demands for the second card. It's a 1050 ti. According to sources, it takes 75 w. My PSU is rated at 650 w. But let's face it, manufactures lie about output constantly.

I bought the mobo and cpu at a computer shop. I remember asking the guy if I got a decent graphics card if it would support 4K. He said it had integrated graphics. I remember him happening to find an older Ryzen CPU buried under the counter. He said that to support that CPU it would have to go through a BIOS upgrade. So I let them make sure it would post. IIRC it did post with the on-board graphics (I don't think I brought a graphics card because I wanted to see if they could fix another board). The Aurous splash screen does not show up. From what I understand, when you have another graphics card, it is set to auto for on-board. That will disable it. The del key is supposed to get into the BIOS, but it won't let me in. I even tried swiping my fingers across all the function keys, and still no luck. I think I have multiple issues?

They don't tell the whole truth, that's for sure. Too many are made using electrolytic capacitors that can't be expected to last much beyond the warranty period, losing capability and stability along the way. If it's out of warranty, open it up for inspection, make sure it has none that are leaky or swollen on their tops or bottoms. If you find any, replace either the the caps or the PSU before it causes damage to something not repairable.

The Aurous splash screen does not show up. From what I understand, when you have another graphics card, it is set to auto for on-board. That will disable it.
Most motherboards disable onboard automatically, if present, to allow the discrete card to work. These newer boards intended to allow an IGP/APU and discrete card to both work together may need a change from default to make that happen, but without any IGP/APU, as yours is, a sole discrete card that isn't broken should always work automatically at least to access BIOS setup. Sometimes though a display might not be cooperative with a selected input from a fussy UEFI BIOS, and need changing to another input type.

The del key is supposed to get into the BIOS, but it won't let me in. I even tried swiping my fingers across all the function keys, and still no luck. I think I have multiple issues?
With the currently installed CPU, you'll have to use a discrete card to get into BIOS. All my Gigabyte boards enter BIOS via DEL, but my newest says ESC also works. It does need to be hit at an appropriate time, not too early, not too late, and held long enough to be sure you timed it OK.

I tried it with my 4K LG TV that only has HDMI inputs, but it blackscreens after Grub and locks up except to remote login with my DP to HDMI and DVI to HDMI converters.

Okay, I just got in the molex connector I needed. The 2nd GPU (1050 TI) does not have a 4 pin power connector that goes to it. I looked up the specs, and it brags about not needing an external power supply, but I don't think my mobo has enough juice to run two. Plus this case doesn't have the greatest airflow (two fans), and I don't like two GPUs being that close to one another. I do have a USB to PCIe adapter. The lights come on, and the GPU fan comes on, but it does not recognize it. I did some research on it, but I don't think I am using the correct terminology.I was hoping this would simply be plug and play. My research mostly gave me steps on how to install drivers. But it shouldn't need any since it worked when it was directly plugged in. Like I said, I did get 4 monitors to work for a few seconds, but then the two monitors that were connected to it went black. I have a Sabent USB C to HDMI splitter and no luck with that. I also can not get into BIOS and check to see if the onboard is disabled.

So I guess how do I configure the external 1050 TI to work? This be more of a headache than I bargained for.

PS I might not be 100% familiar on the terminology, so please keep that in mind when you try and explain something to me.

Thanks!

Mike
