Problems getting cmpci installed under debian woody

I have an recently scavenged frankenbox (AMD K-2 450 MHz) I have been toying with for awhile. I am having trouble getting the soundcard CM8738 to work.

1. Here is the output of "sbin/lspci"

00:00.0 Host bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 530 Host (rev 02)
00:00.1 IDE interface: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5513 [IDE] (rev d0)
00:01.0 ISA bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 85C503/5513 (rev b1)
00:01.1 Class ff00: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] ACPI
00:01.2 USB Controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 7001 (rev 11)
00:02.0 PCI bridge: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 5591/5592 AGP
00:0b.0 Ethernet controller: Davicom Semiconductor, Inc. Ethernet 100/10 MBit (rev 10)
00:0c.0 Multimedia audio controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
00:0c.1 Communication controller: C-Media Electronics Inc CM8738 (rev 10)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: Silicon Integrated Systems [SiS] 6306 3D-AGP (rev a2)

2. I am running debian - woody, kernel version 2.2.20.

No sign of any cmpci or sound card info in dmesg.
Due to the lack of RAM (64 MB) i have been doing everything through the console.

I downloaded cmpci and unpacked it. The README said to do make menuconfig, which yields:

Makefile:159: /Rules.make: No such file or directory
make: *** No rule to make target `/Rules.make'. Stop.

So I figured i needed to run a configure of some sort.
The command "./Config.in" yields me the error message:

"./Config.in: dep_tristate: command not found"

repeated several times.

I have banged my head against this for some time now, and would really appreciate any help.
