yesterday i installed debian sarge with kernel 2.6 and i tried to install the new ati driver, after downloading the ati installer(35mb).
my display card is an ati radeon 9600 pro
i have installed the driver several times, each one after a fresh install.
during my first try ,after installing all the packages suggested from ati's manual(kernel headers etc), i did the next steps.
1.invoke-rc.d kdm stop
2. ./ati........run(i do not remember the exact name)
3.fglrxconfig
4./lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/./make.sh
5./lib/modules/fglrx/build_mod/./make_install.sh
6./modprobe fglrx
7.reboot
i have to mention that i had already changed the fstab configuration and i added the line that refers to tmpfs.
the driver worked fine but the problem that appeard is thak when trying to log off from kde, kdm crashed and the only solution was the reset button.the same problem with xdm.
i installed sarge again and then i tried the suggested method by ati.
1.in kde i ran konsole
2.i wrote ./ati..........run
3.ran fglrxconfig
4.reboot
the installation done after afew clicks in X
the drive worked fine again but the same problem appeared. the system keeps crashing when trying to log off.
i have to mention that every time i try something different i re-install sarge so that any existing problem is fixed.
please if you know any solution to this problem give me ideas, cause i don;t know what to do!

All I can say is that ATI drivers are trash in linux. I can never get them to work right either. A few time I have gotten hardware acceleration with my 9600pro but the system crashed alot like yours. What was my solution, you ask? I no longer have linux on the machine with my 9600pro. If you are serious about keeping sarge or another distro on that machine and would like hardware acceleration, get an nvidia card!
i agree with you but i tried these drivers in mandriva 2005 and kubuntu and everithing worked fine with a few clicks.
for the first time ati's driver got installed in a so easy way.
i think that thi is problem maybe comes from my mistake!
You have told that you reinstall system each time?
I've seen that after first installation it takes two-three reboots to make system work properly... I think my system also get stuck after first or second reboot/logout but then all worked fine as there were no problems...
I haven't tried the new installer, personally i wouldnt trust it. If you want to get them the pre-36mb installer way try this howto i made which is pretty easy to get it working with. Once you get the installation process down its easy.
