Unhappy problem with sound device on alsa 0.90rc8 with onboard c-media

the thread title says most of the subject, to be specific:
some games, apps, etc. think that the sound device is being used and they dont initialize the sound. some sound still work, i.e., when i close my window, the sound that i assigned to closing a window works. but, for example, rtcw hangs at sound init because it believes the sound is already taken. anyone? if you need more info, just ask. when i look at the processes running, btw, i dont see anything that would use sound.
