Problem with second harddrive on Slack 10.2/Samba

I am trying to use one of my harddrives in my slack box for a fileserver type disk and am having some problems. The disk works fine on windows, its a FAT file system. When I try to mount it in linux it says "not a valid block device". When I try to fdisk the drive it says "unable to open /dev/hdb1.

Would reformatting in windows with a different file system or block size help?

Any ideas?

Are you using the correct partition ID?

fdisk requires the drive not the partition ID or is this a typo
fdisk /dev/hdb
