problem with my hard disk

hi all,
I had installed fedora linux on my system. After that I tried to install windows XP. I did run the fdisk and trying to delete the one of the three partitions. After confirming the deletion of the first partition, power was gone. From that moment My hard disk was not working. Expecting help...Thanks and regards

Ouch!
"...power was gone..." Why was that?
A power failure, a shortcircuit or ..?

If computer is ok but BIOS can't detect disk: Get a rescueCD, something like UltimateBootCD that has harddisk recover utilities.
Take it really easy, don't rush. Things like these are tricky, do the wrong thing and you'll completely ruin everything. It's not really difficult to use HD-recovertools, just take your time and allow yourself to think!

When you do get your machine working again, it's much better to install Win XP first, then Fedora.

Please provide more info about your hard drive and the partitions. If you had set up 3 partitions, and your Fedora installation was using all 3, then dropping one of them will obviously corrupt your system and you won't be able to boot.

Please provide a detailed description of how your drive is partitioned, what exists in each partition, and the file system each partition is using. I will agree that if you are trying to dual boot Windows and Linux, it's best to do all your partitioning work first, then install Windows, and then to install Linux. Good luck with it. -- J.W.

Hello ks_krishna76,

If I read this good, it has not much to do with your installation of Windows or Linux, you got a "simple" hardware failure.

If it is a new hard drive, I advice you go back to the shop

hi Mr. J.W.
I don't know that how many partitions in my disk. I just installed fedora linux by selecting Automatic partition option. It was from the CDs of the Book Linux for you. Later I tried to install win XP. I have observed 3 partitions. First one is swap partition. I selected that one and tried to delete that partition. Then it asked press 'L' to delete. I did the same. At that time power failure occured. Next time I run the fdisk command. It displays "Error Reading Fixed disk". Please help me

If you cannot run the fdisk command, I would be concerned that the power failure may have killed your hard drive and that you will need to buy a new one. Does the drive work at all (for example can you get it to boot up into Windows)? -- J.W.

No. The drive is not working. I purchased a new hard disk. Thanks for everyone who showed interest to help me.
