Problem with internal Zip drive in Gentoo Linux

Hi,
I have recently installed Gentoo Linux and have managed to get most things working properly. However, I have a problem with my Zip drive. When the machine boots I receive the following messages:

hdc: IOMEGA ZIP 100 ATAPI, ATAPI FLOPPY drive
.
.
.
hdc:end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 4
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 6
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 0
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 2
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 4
end_request: I/O error, dev 16:00 (hdc), sector 6
unable to read partition table

I have tried a couple of different zip discs both of which can be read under windows on the same machine with no problems.
I have also tried with the Zip disc in at boot time but it makes no difference.

Any suggestions?

David
