problem with intel(R) 536EP V.92 Modem
 

Hi all there over 6 month i try to connect to internet using this fucking modem on linux slackware 9.1 kernel 2.4 somthing, and i can't.
i downloaded "drivers" a few days ago for suse 8.1 or somthing that uses 2.4 kernel and read manulas for it. it seams like i did it, but i still can't connect tru kppp dial, there is somthing called like script i have to make or somthing like that. I maybe a dumbass but please help me.
how to configure that modem and make that script what should i do.
if there is a thread like these please send me a link or somthing.

try Downloading and Compiling the Generic Version of the Driver for that modem from intels web site, make sure you get one that is either an exact match for your Kernel or one that is very close to it.

Also tell me what you did step by step when you installed the RPM, as well as what happened and post the results.

I will try to help you as much as possible, but one thing i can suggest if you have the money is get a 49.99 hardware modem from hayes or another company that has hardware modems. they work well and can be configed in like 30 Seconds. flat.

i just downloaded driver from intel's website
it's for 2.4.4+ kernels and mein is 2.4.22, so should I install modem with those uncompiled drivers
or I need later version of kernel. See the manuals for drivers if it's ok

yes it should work fine, but if there is a problem post the Exact error messages and i will see if can't help you resolve this issue.

I am posting thru Mandrake 10.0 on the AMI-IA56 internal PCI modem with Intel 536ep chipset (Intel doesn't make modems). Don't feel bad...it took me about a month to get connected. You would think that information exchange via internet would be a gigantic priority in Linux, so as to expose more people to it, but it seems to be one of the hardest things to do.
Anyway.....others are correct, easiest hookup is DSL thru network card. If not possible, then next easiest is dialup via external SERIAL(NOT USB) hardware modem. These two methods do not require drivers. Try Best Data or US Robotics. Remember, they have to be hardware modems. I found an old Zoom 56k ext. ser. modem at the local thrift shop(because everyone's going to DSL) for $4 and am using it on the kid's PC.
Hardest is to use internal PCI softmodem (or even hdwr modem) because they rquire specific drivers. The drivers that came with my modem were outdated, but I had done some research on the Intel 536ep and knew there were drivers for it, so dwnloaded the EXACT drivers for my EXACT MDK distro and kernel version 2.6.3-7mdk from Intel site. I can describe what I did in my distro if you think it will help, but am new to linux so can't guarantee anything....

Having the same problem.

I had the 536ep intel modem back when I used dial up. I have dsl wireless and have been using that.

I got the 536ep modem to work rather easily when I was running mandrake 9point something. I decided to put the modem back in and I've been having trouble every since(just with the modem). Of course since then I have gone from the 2.4 kernel to the 2.6 kernel. I figured it would be a breeze now.

I tried the drivers from the intel web site and the drivers that came with my install cd. I can't get it to work. I'm not even sure which version to get.

There are 25 versions. Two are Mandrake. The two for Mandrake are tgz 4.69 SMP and tgz 4.69 UP.

I was wondering if I tried a different one for a different distro whether that might work?

I'm not at my computer now so I cannot give any error messages.

I know on the earlier version on Mandrake they worked well and weren't that hard to set up.Something has changed to make it a lot harder. Maybe it's the different kernel.

ANy help would be appreciated....

you are correct in that it is the kernel diffrence that is giving you the problem. most of the modem drivers out there that work are for the 2.2 and 2.4 seris kernels and have not been ported over to the newer kernel seris 2.6 although there maybe a way around this other than a rewrite of the existing driver, i have no clue as i am not a C programmer.

so in short the easy thing to do is use a kernel the driver was made for or wait for intel or some one else to write a driver for the newer kernel, which i am surprised that most companies that have linux drivers support have not done this already.

That makes sence. So, I have two options: one is to reload and run the 2.4 kernel . The second is to wait to a better driver comes out.

I am using DSL right now so I will put that on hold. I just thought I would try and set the modem up. Last time I tried it, it went pretty well.

Installing wireless made me go crazy....

Linux is pretty neat. I think it will just take a while till it's a little better refined.
I just keep waiting for the day when I don't have too dual boot and I can tell Micro$oft to take a hike.

when i said to use a kernel the driver was made for, i meant you could find the RPM of an existing Kernel and install it along side of your current Kernel and when you need to use the modem you can by booting that Kernel instead of the 2.6 Kernel you use now, thats how i did it for a long time before i got a serial modem.

I want DSL or Cable but in my area the Local cable company is the only place to get cable and it is over $80.00 a month in addition to your cable bill, so it is out of my price range for now. i hate monopolies :mad:

but for what it is worth, linux is coming to that point more and more everyday, so i figure in another 2 years it will be just as easy to install anything you can in windows just as easily in linux (although, i admit i am just being optimistic in that assumption :) )
