Problem with alsa modules (not loading into the kernel)

Hello there

The problem is, I have just installed LFS 5.0 (Linux from scratch), and am now trying to configure alsa to work on my pc. Kernel is 2.4.22, ALSA version is 0.9.6. Now to what I have done:
alsactl tells me it can't find a soundcard, but dmesg tells me
Quote:
EMU10K1 rev 8 model 0x8027 found, IO at 0xe000-0xe01f, IRQ 17
Also kde has working sound through OSS.
modprobe snd-emu10k1 outputs
Quote:
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/snd-emu10k1.o: init_module: No such device
Hint: insmod errors can be caused by incorrect module parameters, including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.
You may find more information in syslog or the output from dmesg
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/snd-emu10k1.o: insmod /lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/snd-emu10k1.o failed
/lib/modules/2.4.22/kernel/drivers/sound/snd-emu10k1.o: insmod snd-emu10k1 failed
depmod tells me that soundcore.o has unresolved symbols, with insmod I managed to know that register_chrdev_Rdcc54d45 is the unresolved symbol.

modules.conf relevant lines:
Quote:
alias char-major-116 snd
options snd major=116 cards_limit=1
alias snd-card-0 snd-emu10k1

alias char-major-14 soundcore
alias sound-slot-0 snd-card-0

alias sound-service-0-0 snd-mixer-oss
alias sound-service-0-1 snd-seq-oss
alias sound-service-0-3 snd-pcm-oss
alias sound-service-0-8 snd-seq-midi
alias sound-service-0-12 snd-pcm-oss

options soundcore irq=17
post-install snd-card-emu10k1 /usr/sbin/alsactl restore
pre-remove snd-card-emu10k1 /usr/sbin/alsactl store
Any ideas on this?

if it's down to unresolved symbols, a full kernel recompile is what i'd hve to suggest trying, to toally clear out any crap that's got trodden in along the way. does striek me as a little strange that it does specifically say it can't fidn the card. I've never been in the situation, so ca't say how likely it is, that your card isn't recognised by alsa from the PCI id or whatever they use to identify it. it *might* be worth checking with the alsa developers for the exact ID. Not a kernel goes by where the changelog doesn't niclude things like that.

you've also got the option of Alsa 1.0 inside a 2.6.x kernel.

I have recompiled a few times already. My card is a SB Live!, and I know it should work, since previous RedHat 8.0 and 9 installations were successfully installed with sound. Perhaps I wrongly configured the kernel? My kernel configuration has sound compiled built in (not a module), but nothing else inside the sound menu (no specific card support, nor OSS suport). This way should be ok, right?
I'll try an ALSA recompile now (third time I do this...).
And BTW, I'd like to have a full working 2.4 installation before going with 2.6

Thumbs up Solved

Just solved it:
Recompiled the kernel with sound as a module, and the recompiled alsa. All is working smoothly now.
