Problem /w 3com gigabit controler in redhat 9

As the title suggests, I'm having trouble with my network card. It's the integrated controler on the A7v600, a 3com "3c2000". For the life of me I can't make it work with redhat 9. I've read a lot about driver issues, and I have no less than 3 drivers that are compatible with this card, but that is not my issue. I'm having trouble because my system does not seem to recognize the device at all. I can see it with lspci, but it's not available in my network settings, even if I define it manually. I did dig up an older complaint on redhat's site that GRUB dometimes doesn't detect it properly and this causes problems, but have no real idea how to check that out... the point also seems moot since I can see it with lspci, it seems like I should be able to load the driver and bring up the interface. I'm new to redhat and generally haven't used *nix since I was a little kid, so any help would be great, thanks.

P.S. Oh, and just to rule this out, I did test it under win98, so I know it's not hardware, I even got it up and running in full duplex gigabit.

Oh and to rule out one more thing, yes I followed the kind and concise instructions on the driver CD, that didn't work so well either. I don't have access to the machine at the moment or else I would post the error it gives me, along with some other info, but it was along the lines of "you dolt, you can't install this module for that device becasue it's not there, at least as far as I can tell, and since I'm the only one in the room who can properly create and foreward ethernet frames using this device, you don't get a say in it". I may be anthropomorphizing a bit, but that was the gist of it.
