i meant you shouldn't slave a hard drive to a cdrom
drive. If i had your machine here, i'd have it booting in
5 minutes. The problem is it takes a day to get the
information here, that you could get at the machine
in 10 seconds.
If you're that determined to have it set like it is, you
should set lilo to boot from your root partition, and
also set that to be your boot partition in lilo.
I don't know how your acronis boot manager works,
and this is what makes this hard for all of us.
but, if you got your fstab entries correct, and lilo.conf
right, and installed it, then you should have the
boot manager that you are using boot that partition
and lilo and linux should take it from there.
The boot entry in lilo is where lilo will be installed.
/dev/hdb would be the master boot record of the
primary slave hard drive. /dev/hdb7 would be the
boot record of the 3rd logical drive in an extended
partition on the secondary master.
the root entry is where the linux exists ( or really the kernel) that you are going to run or boot.
So if you install lilo in /dev/hdb7 and have it set to
load vmlinuz in /boot/vmlinuz, it will be your other
boot managers job to get the computer to that
posistion /dev/hdb7 to get linux to start booting.

The Acronis boot manager doesn't really come into play. If I can get lilo to work propely, I just install Acronis afterwards and it manages the rest.

It acts like the Acronis boot loader just "points" to the other boot manager(s) in the system and provides a nice GUI around the selections. The main reason I bought the Acronis package was for the partition management, but the boot manager is pretty sweet, too!

Each time I reconfigure lilo (by running /sbin/lilo), the new lilo overwrites Acronis and removes it from the picture. I think my real problem is that lilo doesn't boot properly. I'm getting that "/hdb isn't the first drive" warning when running /sbin/lilo that has me a little concerned.

Sigh ...

its always going to say that, when you install it on
a hard drive other than hda, but now i know what
your problem is since you said that. Doesn't acronis
install in the master boot record? If you were installing
lilo in hdb7, like you thought, it would not be overwriting
the master boot record.
your lilo conf should look like this

boot=/dev/hdb7
root=/dev/hdb7
install=/boot/boot-menu.b
map=/boot/map
lba32
default = Linux
prompt
timeout=30
vga=4
image=/boot/vmlinuz
label=Linux
read-only

or similar.
