Problem recognising a CD drive

Hi,

I'm a new user who doesn't know much about how Linux works. I had no problem installing Suse 8.2 from CD, however since I moved my computer from one room to another it won't recongise my CD drive. YaST tells me that there is no CD/DVD drive on the system.

I'm not terribly confident using the shell, and don't want to mess around when I don't understand what I'm doing.

Is there a help page someone could point me towards that explains more about hardware and Linux?

Awfully sorry to be a idiot.

Please flame now ;-)

It could be the cable from the mother board to the cdrom device came loose during the move. It could be the cdrom device just decided to bite the dust and may have nothing to do with the move.

When you boot up, go into the bios screen to see if your computer even finds the cdrom device.

Hi, thanks for getting back to me so quickly!

I've checked the cables and they all seem to be attached, I've also noticed that the 'eject' button on the CD drive does work so it must be getting a power supply.

I've also noticed that since the CD drive stopped working I've been getting an error message when booting.

'Sec Master drive ATAPI incompatable press F1 to
resume'

Could this be linked to my CD drive malfunction?

Having read 'what to put in a hardware question' I've got my kernal, well I put uname -r into the shell and was told '2.4.20-4GB-athlon'

I don't know much about BIOS settings, can anyone put me in the direction of a webpage that can explain it all? I'll have a google for it as well.

Thanks for your help. Sorry to be such a technical incompetent!

Steve

Yep, I think that is the problem with your cdrom. I don't know just what the problem is tho.
Do you get any errors when you boot up with a cd version of linux like Knoppix?
If it is ok using Knoppix, there might be some kind of issue with the version of Suse which you are using.

Does this system have an "old-fashion" floppy drive? If so, you could make and/or download a DOS boot floppy image with CDRom support and see if you can access the CDRom through DOS, If so, than it is not a hardware problem.
