Problem on installing MSI GeForce GTX 1650 super display card
Hi,
MSI GeForce GTX 1650 super display card
Ubuntu 20.04 desktop
The display card can't work properly with following errors;
1. From time to time, saving a text document, the screen turns to a black screen and then login out automatically. I have to re-login.
2. Start -> Activities (on top menu) -> Settings or some applications
The display turns to a black screen -> then logout automatically. I have to re-login but unable starting those applications.
Do I need to install Nvidia driver? If YES, to install the driver on Ubuntu Repo or download it on Nvidia website?
Please advise. Thousand thanks
Regards

What driver are you using currently? noveau? I've never seen this kind of instability just from using noveau - usually the only 'problem' is the dreadful 3D performance. If you're going to install the nVidia driver I would just use the Ubuntu 'Software & Drivers' -> 'Additional Drivers' method as suggested by Ubuntu.
My bigger question is - why do you assume this is software related? Can you provide more specifications for your PC? It sounds like it may be a stability problem - is your PSU junk? Is your cooling not up to par? Do you know this card is good? etc

Hi obobskivich,
Thanks for your reply.
I have solved the problems after installing Nvidia driver
Code:
nvidia-driver-455 - distro non-free recommended
I followed the "Command Line Nvidia Installation Method" mentioned on below document;
How to install the NVIDIA drivers on Ubuntu 20.04 Focal Fossa Linux
https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-insta...al-fossa-linux
Now all problems mentioned on my original post have gone
Regards

Glad to hear it. Just to note for anyone who finds this thread in the future: the GUI method (first option) in that link accomplishes the same thing (if you have GUI available on the machine), and will list all candidates (including older drivers and server variants (which iirc makes no difference for GeForce, but will for Titan/Quadro)). But either way works (and I admittedly forgot the main universe supported the CLI method 'directly' - as in you don't need to add a PPA/repo or download anything directly from NV/some other source).

Hi obobskivich,
Thanks for your further advice.
Yes, you're right. The first method also works. But I prefer command line operation ever-since I turned away from Windows. Its operation is more exact and simple rather than clicking around on screen.
My next adventure will be dual screens. I have only one 4K display and I'll connect a 2560x1440 resolution display as 2nd display. I suppose it works.
Regards

In some cases CLI is 'more exact' but in this case, at least in Ubuntu, there's really no advantage one way or the other, since they're packaging the drivers for you either way.

As long as you get the connections right, it should work just fine - I would use the nVidia X Server Settings applet to adjust position/resolution/refresh vs the built-in options in GNOME, because it offers more options and is easier to work with (IMHO) vs GNOME's display options.
