problem installing orinoco-usb-wlan driver on debian sarge

i'm trying to install drivers for the "orinoco usb client silver" wlan adapter on debian 3.1r0a. the drivers are found on http://orinoco-usb.alioth.debian.org/. as is usual for debian packages, the download site expects you to add it to aptitude's source-list, then apt-get install orinoco-usb. since i want to use this very wlan client to connect to the internet, i can, of course, not do it that way. so i downloaded the folder's content (using windows!) to a local folder and added that local folder to /etc/apt/sources.list. (no, i did not forget to apt-get update)
then, i typed apt-get install orinoco-usb, and the package seems to be found all right, but it fails to unpack it with an error message "trying to overwrite some /var/.../firmware* file which is part of the hotplug package" or something. removing this file, or uninstalling the hotplug package does not change anything.
i did, however, not have any problem installing the appropriate rpm packages on suse and fedora.

does anyone know what's wrong?
