I just added more RAM to my system. I've got duel boot between win XP and slackware, and now when I try to load slack it says "loading linux......." and when the periods finish the screen blacks and nothing happens. Please help me.

Welcome to LQ

Be sure your BIOS is recognizing the new RAM first, and that your motherboard is happy about using it. Can you boot your other OS?

Moving to Linux - Hardware

Cool

Yea, my other OS boots fine. Does that mean that the bios is ok? I'm 99.9999% sure that my mainboard is ok with the new RAM.

Linux is said to be more sensitive to incorrect HW configurations.

Anyway, try going to the BIOS, and load the safe default values (or something like that).

Double check to see if it's really the RAM causing it.

You can also try using Knoppix to do some testing (Live cd, boots directly to RAM, no installation necessary and always comes in handy )

Remove the old stick and put in the new. If it works the memory isa OK. If it doesn't the stick may be bad.

I know Mandrake had some issues with high mem support. Does you kernel have this issue too? I noticed that I had the choice to enable it in my Gentoo. You may have to do that in yours too.

Later

How much memory did you install?

Is it the same memory brand?

Is it the same memory model?

Mandrake and other distributions do not have high memory problems. By default hi-mem is not supported in the kernel, so you have to configure the kernel and compile it for hi-mem support.

You could include mem=866 in your boot loader and then compile your kernel for hi-mem support.

For example
linux mem=866
