Problem installing mandrake 10: Could not uncompress second stage ramdisc

Hi, I am new to linux and am trying to install mandrake 10. It boots and everything fine, but then while "Loading the program to memory..." it gets the error "Could not uncompress second stage ramdisc", and then it says this is probably a hardware problem or bug with the linux kernel.
The alt+F3 screen shows:
*trying to load /tmp/image/mandrake/base/mdkinst_stage2.bz2 as a ramdisc
*reading compressed ramdisc: IO_ERROR
*unsetting automatic

The alt+F4 screen shows a bunch of things that all say "logical block" then some number.
Any help with this is greatly appreciated, thank you

How much ram do you have? IIRC mdk10 requires 64MB to run the install program.

If you have any usb devices connected, try disconnecting them and see if the install program will load.

Ok thanks, I will go try that now

edit: It didn't work, I got the exact same error.
Here is what is on the kernel msg, if that helps:
<3> Buffer I/O error on device hdc, logical block (some number)
<4> hdc: media error (bad sector): status=0x51 {DriveReady SeekComplete Error}
<4> end_request: I/O error, dev hdc, sector (some number)
then this is repeated many times, with the (some number) changing

And after I say "Ok" that it could not uncompress the second stage ramdisc, it shows
error in exec of stage2 :-(
trying to execute '/usr/bin/runinstall2' from the installation volume,
the following fatal error occurred
FATAL ERROR IN STAGE1: I/O error
I can't recover from this.
You may reboot your system.

Is there something wrong with my BIOS? It says I/O error a lot...
