Problem installing madwifi with Dlink 1320

Hello

First of all, thank you for reading my post. I'm new in Linux and I have recently installed SUSE 10.2 and I installed a wireless pci card D-Link WDA-1320. I downloaded the file madwifi-ng-current.tar.gz then I unpacked it in the folder madwifi-ng-r1871-20061229.
When I execute the command 'make', I get the following error '*** Cannot detect kernel version - please check compiler and KERNELPATH. Stop.'
I just don't know what to do. I don't even know if the wireless card is compatible with linux. I probably should install the driver in a different way but I don't know how to do that. Any suggetions on this problem?
Thanks a lot.
Chris

When using SuSE then use the SuSE software package manager. Use YaST. It is an excellent system administration tool. Log on as root and use the start menu to find the YaST application. You will see various sections like hardware, software, system, network, and others. Find the applet to set up a wireless card. The chances are good that SuSE already has the madwifi driver installed and all that you have to do is run the YaST applet to configure the card.

Never try to install any software on SuSE by compiling it. It will never ever work. SuSE uses a nonstandard file layout that makes compiling and installing applications from source very difficult.

I did find the YaST application. I selected Network Devices then on the right I clicked on Network Card. I got to the Menu Network Setup Method which has 2 options. The first is User COntrolled with NetworkManager and the second is Traditional Method with ifup. I selected the first option and then I clicked on next and then it only shows one network device which is the integrated LAN card on my motherboard but no wireless card detected. Why is it not recognizing my wireless card? I don't know what the problem is.

I don't have a running SuSE system in front of me right now although I've used SuSE continuously since v9.0, so I will have to guess. If memory serves I believe that the wireless network card configuration applet is separate from the network card configuration applet so you have to find the applet that is just for wifi cards. I would also guess that you have to install the madwifi driver, using YaST, before the wireless network card configuration tool will work detect your card.
