Problem installing Intel Graphics driver on Scientific Linux 5 [RHEL5]

I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex755 system that comes with an
DELLE207WFP widescreen monitor. I believe that the graphics chip is an
integrated Q35 chipset.

I installed both XP and ScientificLinux 5 (based on RHEL5) on the machine. With XP, I could get the system to display at the monitor's native resolution (1680x1050) using the drivers supplied by Dell.
However, I am having much trouble getting the same resolution on the
Linux setup. I hope that somebody can help can help.

I have tried 915resolution (ver 0.5.2-2.el5.rf) which was unable to
determine the chipset type although it detected an Intel chipset.

I downloaded the integrated intel graphics driver (www.intel.com/go/iegd) for the Q35 chipset
and tried to install the driver. But have had no success. I followed the instructions provided by Intel and at the very last instruction,
# modprobe iegd_mod I get an error.

I am very much new to linux. I have search on many, many forums and homepages looking for a solution but to no avail. I hope that somebody can help me.

After struggling for 2 days with this problem, I have finally solved it (kind of).

The drivers that are available for Scientific Linux 5 (RHEL5) were old/not compatible with the Dell Optiplex 755 PC and Dell E207WFP wide screen monitor that I have. I switched over to Fedora 8 and everything was detected (including the integrated Intel modem which RHEL5 didn't) during the first installation.

I am very happy with the current setup now and am enjoying my dual boot Fedora8 and WinXP pro very much.

If there is anyone who have the same problem, I can give him/her a couple of pointers.
