I recently bought a 80 GB Maxtor 5000LE external hard drive and have been having two problems with it. First, when I create a partition and format it, it appears (when I use df) that the partition is always 3.9 gb, even though I set it to be much larger.

Secondly, when I copy large (more than about 300 mb) amounts of data to the drive the whole system appears to freeze and I have to pully the plug.

I'm running Mandrake 9.0 on a 733 MHZ Dell laptop. Has anyone experienced similar problems or have any suggestions?

i have a similar problem with my new dell latitude d500
it seems to go out to lunch when there is a lot of disk activity.
however when the kernel boots up i notice that it says something like:

dell latitude broken bios

i dont know about you but i will try a bios flash
