Cool Problem accessing root

Hi

My last thread said that I get a black screen during boot on Mandriva Free 2007. Mandriva loads ok, but after the blue screen, everything turns black. This is still the problem, but I got a notch further.

I got a tips which led me to the consol, where I was suppose to do following:

Code:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
After this I should choose VESA driver etc.

But I cant get that far. When login on, I type in my Username and password (which was the same for both root and user), but after I type the code, I get the message that im not a sudoer.

To sum up:
Black Screen during graphical logon
User not a sudoer

Please help!

THX

Don't use the same name for root and user; I doubt that you can. Try "root" for root. I wouldn't use the same password either but that should not stop you logging in as root.

Su + enter + password + enter + command line should work.

I hope you think Mandriva "2007" is worth it. Are there any login options to allow for driver issues? (I forget - I got in ok, even with a nVidia driver.)

Got some help from a friend, who helped me enter xorg.conf. We made it by using "vi" though. In there I found the section for my videocard. Then under "driver": "ati" I changed it to "driver": "VESA" Saved, exited, and entered startx.

This didnt help. When trying to enter X, I got a fatal error. Couldnt find driver vesa. Anyone know why?`

He told my that this was a "not good" distro, and that I should use someother. I have Suse Linux 10.1 on my hand. Is this bether. Keep in mind this is my first experience with Linux.

It may be something silly like using upper case. You are better off using the distro's tool.
