Printing problem - EPSON STYLUS C41 SX

Printer - EPSON Stylus C41SX.
Ubuntu 7.10

I am having problem in printing from Ubuntu. This printer is working well in XP. While trying to get print from my EPSON STYLUS C41SX, I am only getting junk as print.

When I installed the Printer in Ubuntu 7.10, it installed properly. But then when I tried to print it, only prints garbage characters.

Strangely few days back when I reinstalled Gutenprint, I got correct printing, but the problem of Junk Print re-surfaced today. Even re-installing didn't help.

Should I reinstall everything? I am not sure whether that will work because I have done that already.

Please help.

umm, pls try and not double post. Your issue as not changed but I will try to help.

bad news I do not have your hardware or distro, but I used to have an epson and am experienced at using cups.

lets begin.

1) I know from the other post you have been desperate to fix this yourself and so have attempted a number of drivers.

Lets start with a clean setup....so cups gets only one choice.

I am not sure if you use sudo or can use su to get to root powers but I would like you to open a shell and try either

Code:

su....and if asked for passwd do not try the others....input passwd and jump to cups section

(or if above fails try)

su-  (su no gaps hypen) and if asked for passwd...do it and jump to cups section

(or last one is)

sudo firefox  (and if asked put in your NORMAL passwd) (or the name of your web browser)

2) if none of them worked you may need to read how to add yourself to sudoers
http://www.linuxhomenetworking.com/w...Users_and_Sudo

3) cups section

Note you can run cups as a normal user.

to get into cups open a web browser with root powers or sudo power.

at the address bar type.

http://localhost:631/

If you do not see the cups page.....your network or firewall has an error. pls advise if you have error.

4) click on printers tab and delete all printers....to clean up

5) then click on ADMIN tab and click add printers...and according to this site
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_pr...n-Stylus_C41SX

gutenprint is your correct driver...but there are often diff language versions.

6) if that fails you could try downloading the driver in the above link but its an rpm file and you may need a application like alien to install it.

First of all,I really apologize for posting same thread twice in different zones. I must say, you are kind enough not to take any serious action on this. Actually, I was really worried and was only trying to get a solution out.

Thanks aus9, for your help and great details.

I did came to know about CUPS and the procedures you have mentioned here. I must say this is like a full tutorial to me. It will definitely help. In fact I did followed this path and have downloaded the Gutenprint tool and converted it into a .deb file. Then I installed it.

As per the current status, I am now being able to print from Ubuntu. It's printing correctly.

I feel this might be more a problem with Cable than anything else. I am saying this because I found the same problem (printing garbage) when I tried to print from Win. That gives me the understanding that it might not be a problem with driver.

Moreover earlier I have printed from Ubuntu by using Gutenprint and I printed a lot about a few days back. All was well. So this problem may be because of the Cable or may be something else.

Thanks for your help. As I said this knowledge will really help me when I next face any problem (if any) in relation to printing.
