What distro (version) of Linux are you using? What tool did you use to install the printer and what exactly happened?

Regardless, I prefer to always use the CUPS browser interface (Open a browser and enter "localhost:631") When you select "add printer", your printer may be detected--regardless, go thru the steps and see if your printer is listed in the available drivers.

I'm using freespire and tried the control panel way but my printer was not on the list so I picked other and seem to get no where.I'll try what you advised and see what happens Thanks....

100% off-topic, but: Freespire is hands-down the worst distro I ever tried---plus I'm not sure they are even still active.

Consider trying something more mainstream--eg in the top 10 to 20 here: http://distrowatch.com (look at the hit list rt side, scroll down a bit.)
