printer drivers, source for Epson XP-400 Printer SOLVED

do we recognize this as a good source from which to download a printer driver?

I'm trying to help my brother install a printer driver for an Epson XP-400 Printer

it appears they offer a digital signature for their software but it was not immediately obvious how to get their key or -- how they signed their file. their download simply pulls in a .deb

no problem on that but in "going outside" like this I'd really like to have a hash or something by which to verify the download.
the website referenced here..... did not show https even

I assume you've updated to the latest version of CUPS and there is not a driver there? Here is a link directly to Epson for a driver for that printer:

I put MINT 17 LTS on his machine for him-- Intel, X64. after the install I applied all the maintenance.

? : how can i check the CUPS and update to the current level -- id this is not covered by MINT LTS ongoing maintenance? It would be best to get the print driver from within our systems. again I notice the Epson site isn't even protected with SSL

I found this documentation--

the MINT 17 LTS I think should be using the Ubuntu kernel base so this might be OK,--

The CUPS that is bundled with Mint 17 is pretty current and it is included in what is tracked and updated, so it sounds like you probably have the current release. In cases where you have to go to the manufacturer's web site for a Linux driver, it is typically in the form of a .deb package that you download and then install. I've never seen those kinds of things set up as a secure download because the risks are so extremely low. It doesn't involve any sensitive information and it would be very difficult to plant malware without its being noticed; it would be a lot of work to target the two people who would ever access the download.

we installed epson-inkjet-printer-201203w_1.0.0-1lsb3.2_amd64.deb
from http://www.openprinting.org/printers

the install was done with a sudo dpkg -i <filename> command but it had to have |more routing attached

my brother reports the print driver works properly including the scanner although we had to configure it by supplying the wireless IP address -- the search method didn't find the printer

target system MINT 17 LTS x64 Intel

end
