printer configuration error (local) with SuSE 9.1 & HP LJ 6MP

Greeting Everyone! My first post here at LinuxQuestions.org. Any and all assistance would be greatly appreciated.

I'm an old RH and KDE user who has recently moved on to SuSE 9.1 Professional. I installed it a few weeks ago. YaST was easy and it worked as advertised. All was going well until I tried to make some adjustments to my printer's settings so it would recognize the manual paper feed on my HP LJ 6MP. It was then that my problems began.

I began to get the error message "client-error-request-value-too-long." I tried re-doing the set-up and re-installing the printer using YaST but to no effect. The printer would not print a test page. I also tried re-installing the printer using kprinter but no-go. Kprinter wouldn't even allow me to re-install my printer in administrator mode or get into the CUPS configuration system.

In checking these forums I noticed another SuSE 9.1 user who had a similar problem with another HP printer. He solved it by using YaST to uninstall all the CUPS-related programs and then re-installing them. Unfortunately, this course of action is closed to me as I have done a fair amount of upgrading since I did my initial installation from CD. YaST came back with warning and listed all sorts of dependency problems I would face if I chose to uninstall CUPS, so I didn't.

After a bit more experimenting, here are the error messages I am getting back from YaST when I try to run a test page:

cups(File)DoRequest error: client-error-not-authorized
lpr: unable to print file: client-error-request-value-too-long

I'm not new to Linux, but I am new to CUPS and SuSE 9.1. I've also had few printer problems in the past. Any help would be greatly appreciated. In anybody could just give me an explanation of what these error messages really mean or what might be causing them, it would be a REAL big help.

Thanks!
