Pretty major CDROM drive issue.
Hi all,
Its simple really. When I "mount /dev/cdrom" or any other mount command on the cdrom drive it starts to spin, pauses, and no other response.
Ctrl-C doesn't work, but opening another vt does.
10 secs later, and a "kernel panic"
No response anything, reboot required.
However the drive works fine on my WIn98 boot, and i've never had this problem before with it in linux.
Its redhat 9, on an Xp1700+, blah etc.
Cheers

A bit weird. What type of CD-ROM is it, just straight IDE? I've got a set of SCSI CD-ROMs that managed to kill my Linux box when I mount them

Straight LITEON IDE, and i've used it fine on RH8 before.
I'm not sure i've used it on RH9 before, and whether its worked at all on RH9. Maybe thats the problem.

ha..hahahahah..
I have a sony ide..701T..and I can't even boot..don't use 9 unless you can tweak it. I can barely install 8.0..the controller on the mb seems not to be supported. LILO recognizes all hardware, spins it up..then after config screen loads..cd won't even light up, and can't eject.

Uhm... in that case no further suggestions as I'm not a Redhat guy. Seems damn weird though.

This is just a long shot, primarily because I don't know more details, but you may consider try the following:
1. Make sure your CD is set as the master on your secondary IDE.
2. In your BIOS, set your "PnP O/S" to disable or other.
3. Check all cabling and connections and make sure everything is
securely attached and seated.
4. If you can get into your linux directory, make sure the correct
devices and their corresponding parameters are listed in your
FSTAB file and that they do correspond with the selections in
your /mnt folder.
This is some ideas I can think of to check offhand, hopefully this helps.
