Preorder advice : new sound card to Ubuntu 8.10 /Open Suse 11?

I am in progess to by a new pc and have also liked to buy a sound card

Could I get a little help how far is open source creative with there drivers to the Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi serie?

There is a very long list of sound cards that LInux supports. It's hard to imagine you getting one that wouldn't have a driver in the kernel. Sound Blaster has been supported since maybe day one? Chances are that the audio port on your motherboard is supported, or do you just want a premium sound card?

Yes would like to get a premium sound card, but i guess i cot start with the onboard sound card.

Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha kills Intel's network cards

If you rely on an Intel network card for day to day activities, then steer clear of the latest Ubuntu 8.10 Alpha, which corrupts the card's NVRAM used to store MAC addresses.

Well, it looks like the good times that are the Ubuntu alpha testing process hit a bit of a snag recently, as one of the latest kernels apparently had the nasty side effect of irreparably damaging some users' hardware -- specifically, certain Intel network cards. So far, it seems that only laptops have been affected by the bug, which corrupts the NVRAM used to store data like MAC addresses, but folks don't seem to be ruling out the possibility that it could affect desktops as well. What's more, while a warning has been added to the ISO download, it hasn't been pulled altogether, with the only explanation given being that it would delay the 8.10 release schedule too much.
