PowerMac G5 64bit..can i load linux?

What distro and what release can i load? I know debian has a PPC release which should work, but its not 64 bit. I do not want to pay for yellow dog, im meerly doing this for fun, i was given this G5 by someone and i am not a mac user...at all...so i figured why not put linux on it. Anyways if anyone can give me some ideas, id appreciate it, otherwise im going to donate it and get a tax write off hahaha. Thanks in advance!

Not to question your intent, but what do you want to do with the machine that leads you to turn your back on its own OS X? It is a worthwhile OS for doing lots of things, especially with a G5.....

my intent was to run linux. not mac os x. sorry if i was vague?

I dont like mac's,they are not main stream, i have nothing to benefit in my career by learning more about mac's. I want a 64 bit linux desktop/server. Thats my basic intent.

There is a well written article on IBM's AlphaWorks that discusses installing Yellowdog Linux on a G5. It also contains several good links for more reading.
