power calibration error?

About everytime I try to burn a CD with cdrdao I get the following error. It says power calibration error, but it doesn't ruin the CD. I just eject the CD put it back in and try a few more times and it eventually works. Can anybody help me with this?

Cdrdao version 1.1.7 - (C) Andreas Mueller <andreas@daneb.de>
SCSI interface library - (C) Joerg Schilling
Paranoia DAE library - (C) Monty

Check http://cdrdao.sourceforge.net/drives.html#dt for current driver tables.

Using libscg version 'andreas-0.5-UNIXWARE_Patch'

0,0,0: IDE-CD R/RW 8x4x32 Rev: D2,2
Using driver: Generic SCSI-3/MMC (raw writing) - Version 2.0 (options 0x0000)

Starting write at speed 8...
Pausing 10 seconds - hit CTRL-C to abort.
Process can be aborted with QUIT signal (usually CTRL-\).
Using 16 byte P-Q sub-channel data mode.
Executing power calibration...

I only ever got power calibration errors for two reasons:
1) I was using rubbish discs in my burner.
2) My old burner was heading to the great hardware heaven.
